Follow the proposed tax measure to support transportation options

11/7/2019

Midtown Neighborhood Association members may be interested in ongoing proceedings before the Sacramento Transportation Authority (STA) to consider a November 2020 ballot measure for a half cent sales tax to support transportation expenditures.  http://www.sacta.org/

Current local sales tax from Measure A for transportation projects, including alternative modes and traditional automobile infrastructure projects, is administered by the STA. Measure A’s list of transportation projects was supported by voters in 2004.

STA board members are considering a second sales tax measure that will raise more funds to continue the transportation investments.

With federal and state funding for transportation projects limited, Sacramento County, its five cities, and our regional transit system are challenged by the backlog of transportation maintenance and needed safety upgrades, as well as the demands from residents for more transportation choices and mandates to protect air quality from our area’s number one pollution source – vehicles.  In recent meetings of the STA, stakeholders have reported $12 billion in unmet transportation needs!

In our last community meeting, a couple of organizations actively following the STA proceedings presented to our board and community members in attendance on their advocacy work around the potential sales tax.  These were SMART (Sacramento Metro Advocates for Rail and Transit) and SacMoves.  Statements from the two organizations are included below.

Members interested in advocating for transit and active transportation options are invited to follow the proceedings before the STA.  The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, November 14, at 1:30 pm, at 700 H Street, Suite 1450.   http://www.sacta.org/
