Follow the proposed tax measure to support transportation options

11/7/2019

Midtown Neighborhood Association members may be interested in ongoing proceedings before the Sacramento Transportation Authority (STA) to consider a November 2020 ballot measure for a half cent sales tax to support transportation expenditures.  http://www.sacta.org/

Current local sales tax from Measure A for transportation projects, including alternative modes and traditional automobile infrastructure projects, is administered by the STA. Measure A’s list of transportation projects was supported by voters in 2004.

STA board members are considering a second sales tax measure that will raise more funds to continue the transportation investments.

With federal and state funding for transportation projects limited, Sacramento County, its five cities, and our regional transit system are challenged by the backlog of transportation maintenance and needed safety upgrades, as well as the demands from residents for more transportation choices and mandates to protect air quality from our area’s number one pollution source – vehicles.  In recent meetings of the STA, stakeholders have reported $12 billion in unmet transportation needs!

In our last community meeting, a couple of organizations actively following the STA proceedings presented to our board and community members in attendance on their advocacy work around the potential sales tax.  These were SMART (Sacramento Metro Advocates for Rail and Transit) and SacMoves.  Statements from the two organizations are included below.

Members interested in advocating for transit and active transportation options are invited to follow the proceedings before the STA.  The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, November 14, at 1:30 pm, at 700 H Street, Suite 1450.   http://www.sacta.org/

The  Great  Sacramento  Revival

1/31/2016

A shorter version was originally posted in part at Sacramento Press.

Artisanal coffee, handlebar mustaches, basket-equipped bikes and a plethora of farm-to-dining choices. Did I just step into Portland? Nope. This is the scene in Midtown Sacramento.

Long derided by many Bay Area residents as a stop along the way to Tahoe. Sacramento has come of age. With decades’ long investment into refurbishing and developing its urban core, reversing previous missteps of over-suburbanization, Sacramento is reinventing itself from a once staid government town to the next great city where the young and old alike can live a vibrant and intelligent urban.

By reinvesting into its historical central city, focusing on infill projects and the new Golden 1 arena taking center stage downtown, Sacramento’s coolness factor is now something to be reckoned with.
Sacramento’s reinvention should start with the assertion of a unique and alternative Northern Californian spirit.
